Sea to Sky Gondola Elopement: Everything You Need to Know
The Sea to Sky Gondola is one of the most popular elopement locations in the corridor, and for good reason: 885 metres of elevation gain without breaking a sweat, panoramic views of Howe Sound, the Tantalus Range and the Chief, and a suspension bridge swaying between the peaks.
It does take more planning than most locations, so here's everything you need to know.
Why the Gondola Works for Elopements
The gondola gives you alpine views without the alpine hike, because you ride 10 minutes up from the base and step out onto a platform where the view stretches from the islands of Howe Sound to the glacial peaks of the Tantalus Range.
If you want mountain grandeur without a 6-hour walk to reach it, this is the sweet spot.

Best Ceremony Spots
Sky Pilot Suspension Bridge
The one everyone recognises, spanning 100 metres between two peaks with nothing below it but air and forest. Stand in the middle and the mountains do the rest.
The catch: The bridge is a public attraction. Other visitors will be walking across. For privacy, you need to time it right (see below).
Spirit Trail Viewpoints
The Spirit Trail is a network of short walking paths along the ridge above the Summit Lodge, with several viewpoints that work as semi-private ceremony spots. They're less dramatic than the bridge and more intimate, and you can often find one where you're the only people there.
The Summit Lodge Deck
On a quiet day the outdoor deck of the Summit Lodge works well, with views south down Howe Sound, and the lodge staff are accustomed to elopements.
Backcountry: Beyond the Trails
For more adventure the trails above the gondola station lead into genuine backcountry, with the Sea to Summit trail connecting to higher viewpoints and fewer people. They ask for more time and hiking fitness, and they give you real solitude in return.
Timing Your Gondola Elopement
Time of Day
First gondola (opening time): This is the best option for privacy. The first ride up gives you 30-60 minutes before the crowds arrive. Morning light from the east illuminates the mountains beautifully.
Last gondola (before closing): Late afternoon light in the Sea to Sky is golden and warm. Fewer people as the day winds down. Just make sure you leave time for the last ride down.
Midday: The busiest period. Not recommended for ceremony unless you're comfortable with onlookers.
Season
Summer (June-September): Longest hours, best weather, but the most visitors. Weekdays are significantly quieter than weekends.
Autumn (September-October): Beautiful golden light and autumn colours in the valley. Shorter hours but fewer people.
Winter (November-March): Snow at the summit creates a magical atmosphere. Visibility can be limited by cloud and fog, but when conditions are right, it's extraordinary.
Spring (April-May): Variable weather but the mountain comes alive with green. Good balance of conditions and crowd levels.
Day of Week
Weekdays are dramatically quieter than weekends, especially Tuesday through Thursday, so if you have the flexibility a weekday ceremony will feel considerably more intimate.
Permits and Costs
Gondola Tickets
You'll need gondola tickets for everyone in your party. As of 2025:
- Adult ticket: ~$70 CAD per person (confirm current pricing when you book)
- Off-peak pricing may be available in shoulder seasons
Photography Permit
The Sea to Sky Gondola may require a commercial photography permit for professional elopement photography. Permit costs and requirements vary. Contact the gondola operations team directly, and do it early.

What to Wear
The summit runs 5 to 10 degrees Celsius cooler than the highway, with wind on top of that.
For the bride/partner: Layers under your outfit, a warm wrap or shawl for between shots. A dress with some weight (not too floaty in the wind). Comfortable shoes for walking. You can change into heels for photos.
For the groom/partner: A jacket or vest works well. The mountain backdrop is casual-elegant, not black-tie. Consider what looks good in wind.
For both: Sunglasses for the ride up (the glare off Howe Sound can be intense), sunscreen, and water.

Before the day:

The day:
- You arrive at the gondola base station for first ride (or your chosen time)
- Ride up together. This is beautiful in itself
- Walk to the ceremony location. Lana sets up while you take in the view
- Ceremony: 15-30 minutes, intimate and personal
- Portrait session around the summit: bridge, trails, viewpoints
- Post-ceremony walk and golden hour session if timing allows
- Ride back down
Total time at summit: 2-3 hours typically

Is the Gondola Right for You?
The Sea to Sky Gondola is ideal if you:

- Want the option of a heated indoor space as backup
- Value convenience. It's right off the highway
It might not be right if you:
- Want complete solitude (consider Shannon Falls at dawn, or The Chief summit)
- Want a multi-hour adventure experience (a trail ceremony may suit you better)
- Are visiting on a busy summer weekend and want maximum privacy
Frequently Asked Questions
Can we ride the gondola in our wedding clothes? Yes, though you'll be sitting in a small enclosed cabin, so make sure loose fabric and veils are secured for the ride up.
What happens if it's foggy? Fog at the summit is common in spring and autumn and it usually works in your favour, though if visibility drops to nothing we'll talk through alternatives. Lana watches the forecast and will suggest a backup.
Can we bring champagne? Check with the gondola on their current alcohol policy, since it's their call rather than ours. Champagne at the summit works for some couples, and others wait until they're back at their accommodation.
Is there cell service at the top? Generally yes, though it can be spotty, which is arguably good news on a day when you want to be present rather than checking your phone.
