Shannon Falls Elopement: A Waterfall Wedding in Squamish
Shannon Falls looks better in the rain, which is worth knowing before you pick a date. At 335 metres it's the third tallest waterfall in British Columbia, and it sits five minutes from downtown Squamish right off the Sea to Sky Highway. You get a lot of drama for a very short walk.
Why Shannon Falls Works So Well
The viewing platform at the base puts you close enough to feel the mist, with the falls filling the frame behind you. It's a wall of water dropping 335 metres through rock and moss, and overhead the cedar and Douglas fir close in around you.
Rain improves all of it. The flow intensifies, the green deepens, the mist thickens, and the whole scene gets more atmospheric than it ever manages on a clear day.

Four options, roughly ordered by how much drama you want against how much privacy.
The Main Viewing Platform
A short flat walk from the parking lot brings you to the base, where the waterfall fills your entire field of vision. The spray is tangible, and the sound sits underneath everything as a constant gentle roar.
Pros: Maximum drama, easy access, the falls are your entire backdrop. Cons: Popular with tourists, especially midday on summer weekends. Spray will get you damp.
The Forest Trail
The trail up to the platform passes through old-growth cedar. Several spots along it open into small clearings, with the forest as your backdrop and the falls still audible behind you.
Pros: More private than the viewing platform, beautiful forest atmosphere, sheltered from rain. Cons: Less dramatic than being right at the falls.
The Upper Falls Trail
A steeper trail climbs to a higher vantage, where you see the falls from above and across with Howe Sound out in the distance. Far fewer people make it up this far.
Pros: More private, unique angle, adventure element. Cons: Moderate hiking required, trail can be slippery when wet.
Connection to the Sea to Sky Trail
Shannon Falls Provincial Park connects into the wider Sea to Sky Trail network. If you'd rather the ceremony came at the end of a proper walk through the forest, there are good spots 20 to 30 minutes in.
Best Timing
Time of Day
Early morning (7-9 AM): The park is nearly empty, and because the falls face east they catch the morning sun while the light is still soft.
Late afternoon (after 4 PM): The casual visitors have mostly cleared out by then and the light goes warm amber, which in summer makes golden hour here genuinely worth planning around.
Midday (11 AM - 2 PM): Avoid it in summer, because that's when the lot fills and the tour buses arrive. From November to March it's fine, since the park stays quiet all day anyway.
Season
Spring (March-May): Snowmelt puts the falls at peak flow and their most powerful, with fewer visitors around and everything green.
Summer (June-August): Warmest, driest and longest days, but also by a wide margin the busiest, which makes weekday mornings essential rather than optional.
Autumn (September-November): Golden light and autumn colour through the surrounding forest, with the flow picking back up as the fall rain arrives, and crowds thinning out after Labour Day.
Winter (December-February): Moody, dramatic and very quiet. It rains frequently, which as established makes the falls better, so bring layers and waterproofs.
Day of Week
Tuesday-Thursday: Quietest, and at opening time you'll likely have the viewing platform to yourselves.
Friday-Monday: Busier, especially in summer, so early morning is your best bet.
Permits
Shannon Falls is a BC Provincial Park, so a commercial activity permit is required for professional elopement photography and ceremonies. We take care of that for you as part of planning the day. BC Parks takes 2 to 4 weeks to process an application, which is worth knowing if you're working to a tight timeline.
What to Wear
Footwear
The main path to the viewing platform is paved and flat, so you can wear whatever you like and heels are fine for that walk. If you're heading onto the forest trails or up to the upper falls, bring something comfortable you don't mind getting dirty.
Clothing
The forest shelters the site, so there's less wind here than at exposed locations. The spray is the thing to plan for, especially in spring and winter.
Consider:
- A dress with some substance (flowing fabrics look beautiful in the mist)
- A warm layer for between shots, because the forest stays cool even in summer
- A rain jacket or a good wrap for wet conditions
- Something you're happy to get slightly damp
Embrace the Weather
Rain gives you water on your skin, mist in your hair and the falls going hard behind you. Fair weather doesn't give you that.

Everything worth photographing is close by. You can hold the ceremony at the falls and then pick up one or two more spots for portraits:
- Stawamus Chief Base: 2 minutes away. Granite walls, striking backdrop.
- Sea to Sky Gondola: 5 minutes away. Adds mountain views to the day.
- Porteau Cove: 15 minutes south. Ocean-and-mountain sunset portraits.
- Nexen Beach: 10 minutes north. Golden hour reflections.

What a Shannon Falls Elopement Day Looks Like
A typical flow:
6:30 AM: Meet at your accommodation. Get ready.
7:30 AM: Drive to Shannon Falls (5 minutes from downtown Squamish).
7:45 AM: Walk in to the ceremony spot. Lana sets up.
8:00 AM: Ceremony. 15 to 25 minutes. Just you, the waterfall and the forest.
8:30 AM: Portraits around the falls. Different angles, the forest trail, the upper viewing area.
9:30 AM: Second location if you want one. Porteau Cove for oceanfront, or the gondola for mountains.
10:30 AM: Wrap up. Go get brunch.
Total time: 3 hours, arrival to departure.
